Background of the Study

Medication safety is a critical concern in pediatric healthcare, as children’s physiology and metabolism differ significantly from adults. Pediatric nurses play an essential role in ensuring the safe administration of medications to children, including proper dosing, monitoring for side effects, and educating parents. In Katsina State, where healthcare access may be limited, the awareness and adherence to pediatric medication safety guidelines are crucial to preventing medication errors and adverse drug reactions (Suleiman et al., 2024).

This review will examine the awareness and compliance of pediatric nurses with medication safety guidelines in Katsina State, exploring factors that influence adherence and how safety practices can be improved to enhance patient care.

Statement of the Problem

Medication errors in pediatrics can result in serious harm, yet research suggests that compliance with medication safety guidelines among pediatric nurses may be inconsistent. In Katsina State, a region with limited healthcare resources, there may be gaps in the training and awareness of pediatric nurses regarding best practices in medication safety. Understanding the level of awareness and compliance with medication safety guidelines is critical to improving medication practices and child safety.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of pediatric medication safety guidelines among pediatric nurses in Katsina State.
  2. To evaluate the compliance of pediatric nurses with medication safety guidelines.
  3. To identify the barriers that prevent pediatric nurses from adhering to medication safety guidelines in Katsina State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of pediatric medication safety guidelines among pediatric nurses in Katsina State?
  2. How compliant are pediatric nurses with pediatric medication safety guidelines?
  3. What factors hinder the compliance of pediatric nurses with medication safety guidelines?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Pediatric nurses in Katsina State have a high level of awareness of pediatric medication safety guidelines.
  2. Pediatric nurses in Katsina State comply with medication safety guidelines to a significant extent.
  3. Barriers such as lack of training, inadequate resources, and high workload hinder the compliance of pediatric nurses with medication safety guidelines.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This review will focus on the practices of pediatric nurses in public healthcare facilities in Katsina State. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining reliable data on nurses’ knowledge and practices, as well as differences in compliance across different healthcare settings.
